Can VA Aid and Attendance help pay for home care?

The short answer

It can help some veterans and surviving spouses. Aid and Attendance is an added amount on a VA pension for people who need another person’s help with daily activities such as bathing, feeding and dressing. The maximum annual pension rate with Aid and Attendance is $29,093 for a veteran with no dependents, about $2,424 a month. What a person actually receives depends on their income.12

Who qualifies for Aid and Attendance

The VA says at least one of these must be true:1

  • You need another person to help you perform daily activities, like bathing, feeding and dressing.
  • You have to stay in bed, or spend a large part of the day in bed, because of illness.
  • You are a patient in a nursing home because of loss of mental or physical abilities.
  • Your eyesight is severely limited, as the VA defines it. The VA page gives the exact measures.

Maximum annual rates, effective 1 December 2025

These are maximums. The VA says the payment equals the maximum rate minus your countable annual income for VA purposes, so it is not a flat amount.2 Net worth limits and wartime service rules also apply. Check the VA pages for the current rules.

Aid and Attendance and Housebound are separate

You cannot receive Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits at the same time.1 Housebound is for people who spend most of their time at home because of a permanent disability.1

Are these the 2026 rates?

They are the rates effective 1 December 2025, the latest shown on the VA pages when we checked. The VA adjusts rates each December.2

Is Aid and Attendance a payment to the caregiver?

The VA describes it as an added amount on a pension for the veteran or surviving spouse who needs help. We did not find a VA statement about how the money may be spent, so ask the VA before you rely on it for a specific arrangement.1
