How to check a home care agency’s license in California

The short answer

Ask the agency for its Home Care Organization license number, then search it on the State of California’s Care Facility Search. You can also check an individual caregiver’s registration on the Home Care Aide Registry. Every agency in our directory shows its state license number and status.123

Check the agency

  1. Ask the agency for its Home Care Organization license number.
  2. Search it in the Care Facility Search run by the Department of Social Services.1
  3. Read the status. In the state’s public data file, a license is marked LICENSED, CLOSED or PENDING.3

Check the caregiver

California requires the caregivers a Home Care Organization employs to be registered Home Care Aides. The Department’s fact sheet points families to the public Home Care Aide Registry search.2 It suggests asking the agency for the aide’s registration ID and name as it appears on the registration.1

What the state data shows

The state’s public data file for Home Care Organizations includes license status, license first date, closed date, inspection and complaint visits, and citation numbers.3 Our directory lists every Home Care Organization marked LICENSED in Los Angeles County, and the count was 658 in the state data we imported on 20 September 2026. Licenses close and open, so check the date.

Where to report a concern

The Department states that it does not have authority to investigate complaints against an individual home care aide. A complaint goes against the agency.1

  • A complaint about a licensed Home Care Organization: the Department of Social Services, (844) 538-8766, or its online complaint form.4
  • Suspected abuse of an older or dependent adult in Los Angeles County: the Elder Abuse Hotline, 1-877-4R SENIORS (1-877-477-3646), which the county lists for urgent reports.5

Does every home care agency in California need a license?

Home Care Organizations must be licensed by the Department of Social Services before providing home care services. The law took effect on 1 January 2016.1

What if a caregiver was hired privately?

The Department has no oversight of private hires. If you hire directly, you are the employer. See agency versus private caregiver.1
